The California legislature is considering a bill that would take away the full right to Confession from priests and from everyone who works with priests in parishes and Church agencies across the state.
We agree with the intention behind SB 360: that all youth should be protected from sexual abuse. But clergy and and ministers are already “mandated reporters” — which means that when they hear information about suspected child abuse, they are required to report this to law enforcement. And there is no evidence that denying tens of thousands of California Catholics the right to seek God’s forgiveness in Confession will protect children.
This website is designed to provide information on the proposed legislation and to help our community take action in calling on California assembly members to vote NO on SB 360.
If you or someone you know has been abused, please report to law enforcement and contact the Office of Victims Assistance Ministry of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles at (800) 355-2545. For more information on the Archdiocese of Los Angeles abuse prevention efforts visit protect.la-archdiocese.org.
